How to Keep Your Dog Cool and Safe in Summer Heat.
As temperatures rise, so does the risk of heatstroke in dogs — especially in breeds with thick coats or short noses. In this post, we’ll share practical tips to help your dog stay cool, hydrated, and safe during the hottest months. From knowing the signs of overheating to creating a shady haven, a little planning can go a long way in keeping your pet comfortable all summer long.
During the hot summer months our pets can be particularly vulnerable to heat stroke. Signs to look out for include: excessive panting or drooling. Brick red or purple gums, and eventually lethargy, collapse and even seizures.
If you see any of these signs or you suspect your pet is suffering from heatstroke, you need to act immediately! Apply cold water all over their body, THEN take them to the vet as soon as possible.
Top tip: While you are getting them wetted down, start the car and set the AC to MAX, so that the car has had time to cool down by the time you set off.
Remember “Wet before vet!”
Despite some people saying that there is a risk of cold shock to animals during rapid active cooling, the science suggests this is not true, instead the evidence suggests better outcomes and greater survival rates where active cooling has been initiated by pet owners before they get to to the vet.
During the summer months a little planning goes a long way when it comes to keeping our family and pets safe in the heat. So please check the weather forecast and if it is going to be a hot one, avoid walking your pets in the heat of the day and don’t let them run around for long periods.
Make sure they too have access to shade and fresh cold water at all times, and please never leave pets unattended in cars, even for a very short time.
